Legendary Silent Hill Composer Akira Yamaoka Hopes to Score Resident Evil in the Future

A Horror Legend’s Unfulfilled Ambition

For fans of Japanese horror and survival horror games, Akira Yamaoka is a household name. His haunting, atmospheric scores defined the chilling tone of the early Silent Hill games, creating soundscapes that continue to unsettle players decades later. Despite his legacy, Yamaoka has one dream he has yet to fulfil — working on Resident Evil.

Currently Deep in Silent Hill’s Revival

Yamaoka remains actively involved in Konami’s Silent Hill revival projects, including the highly anticipated Silent Hill 2 remake in collaboration with Bloober Team. He is also confirmed as the composer for the upcoming Silent Hill f, a new entry set to expand the series’ unsettling lore.

Outside of Konami, Yamaoka has contributed to other projects, including the title DarkSwitch. It was during an internal interview for DarkSwitch that he revealed his dream collaboration.

The Resident Evil Connection

When asked which franchise he most wanted to work on, Yamaoka didn’t hesitate — Resident Evil. Often considered Silent Hill’s chief rival in the survival horror genre, Capcom’s series is experiencing a golden era thanks to acclaimed remakes and successful new mainline entries.

Yamaoka didn’t share specifics about his creative vision for the series, but he did note that he has played the games extensively and would be “very happy” to work on one in the future.

A Hypothetical Match Made in Horror

Yamaoka’s trademark mix of haunting melodies, layered ambience, and unnerving sound effects could bring a fresh edge to Resident Evil’s tense atmosphere. Fans have long speculated about what such a collaboration could sound like — and while there’s no indication Capcom has reached out, the possibility remains tantalising.
