A New Chapter After Wukong’s Success
Following the breakout success of Black Myth: Wukong, developer Game Science has revealed its next ambitious title in Black Myth: Zhong Kui. While many expected the studio to expand on Wukong through DLC or sequels, the surprise reveal instead focuses on Zhong Kui, a legendary mythological figure revered in Chinese folklore as a relentless vanquisher of demons.
The announcement came via a cinematic trailer at Gamescom 2025’s Opening Night Live, confirming the project’s existence but offering no gameplay footage just yet. According to Game Science, development remains in its very early stages. However, the reveal was designed to assure fans that the studio has no plans of slowing down after Wukong’s global success.
Who Is Zhong Kui in Chinese Mythology?
Unlike Sun Wukong, whose legend is widely recognised thanks to Journey to the West, Zhong Kui is a more regionally celebrated hero. Traditionally depicted as a fierce demon hunter with a scholarly appearance, the mythical figure is said to banish evil spirits and protect humanity from supernatural harm.
By choosing this protagonist, Game Science is tapping into a deep well of Chinese cultural heritage. This shift not only allows for a different narrative direction but also provides room for unique combat mechanics compared to Wukong’s fast-paced martial arts and staff-based gameplay.
What to Expect From Black Myth: Zhong Kui
Like its predecessor, Black Myth: Zhong Kui is planned as a premium single-player action RPG for both PC and consoles. Game Science emphasised that while the game will share DNA with Wukong, it will also deliver a distinct combat identity, ensuring Zhong Kui feels like more than just a reskin of the Monkey King.
Interestingly, the studio also hinted during an official Q&A that Wukong’s journey isn’t finished. This leaves the door open for expansions, spin-offs, or even a direct sequel alongside the development of the new game.
With no release date or window confirmed, fans will need to be patient — but expectations are high after Game Science proved its ability to blend myth, combat, and cinematic storytelling with Wukong.
