From Pandemic Breakout to Global Flagship
When Genshin Impact launched in 2020, few expected it to dominate the global stage. Released during the pandemic, the game became a cultural touchstone by proving that a free-to-play RPG with gacha mechanics could capture mainstream audiences. Five years later, Genshin Impact remains HoYoVerse’s crown jewel, and the studio has no plans to slow down.
Version 6.0 Luna”Expands the World
In a livestream showcase, HoYoVerse unveiled Genshin Impact Version 6.0, Luna. The update launches on September 10 and introduces Nod-Krai, a long-requested region that expands the game’s open world. Alongside the new location, players can expect fresh story quests, unique characters with different combat styles, and a slate of celebration rewards, including Primogems and gacha resources.
The update continues HoYoVerse’s tradition of delivering major expansions tied to community celebrations, blending narrative depth with seasonal rewards.
HoYoVerse Targets a 20-Year Lifespan
Perhaps the most surprising announcement from the stream was HoYoVerse’s ambition for Genshin Impact to last 20 years or more. Addressing speculation that the main narrative might be wrapping up, the studio clarified its long-term vision: a continuously evolving IP rather than a project nearing its conclusion.
Future possibilities could include multi-decade story arcs, potential sequels in the style of the Honkai series, or even user-generated content tools similar to Roblox, allowing players to design their own gameplay modes.
Platforms and Longevity
Currently available on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, iOS, and Android, Genshin Impact will begin phasing out support for PlayStation 4 in 2026. Despite years of rumours, a Nintendo Switch version has still not materialised, leaving its release status uncertain.
If HoYoVerse succeeds in maintaining Genshin Impact for two decades, it could join the ranks of the longest-running live-service RPGs in gaming history. More than just a game, the project is evolving into a platform designed for sustained player engagement over decades.
