Capcom Explains Why Onimusha Took Nearly Two Decades for a Glorious Return

Capcom producer Akihito Kadowaki reveals that Onimusha’s long-awaited return was delayed for years due to limited resources, with the franchise finally making a comeback in 2026 with Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

Onimusha Returns After Nearly 20 Years

Why the Franchise Went Dormant

Capcom has been riding high in recent years, thanks to the success of Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Yet for all the publisher’s success, the Onimusha series remained untouched for nearly two decades.

In a recent interview with JP Times, producer Akihito Kadowaki explained why. While there was always strong interest inside Capcom to revive the franchise, resources were tied up in other blockbuster productions. Multiple Monster Hunter entries, new Resident Evil instalments, and Devil May Cry 5 consumed the company’s development capacity, leaving no room for Onimusha.

Building Towards a Revival

That changed in 2020, when Capcom finally assembled a small team dedicated to bringing the franchise back. By this point, the company’s RE Engine had matured enough to support the ambitious vision for a new game in the series.

The team has since grown to around 170 developers, working on what will officially be the first major new instalment in years: Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

Release Plans for Way of the Sword

Capcom has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. While no exact date has been given, this marks the series’ long-awaited return and the first major entry since the mid-2000s.

For fans of Capcom’s samurai action franchise, the wait is nearly over.
