Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Announced with New Visual Style and Gameplay Upgrades

Square Enix has officially announced Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a bold reworking of the 2000 JRPG classic, during the latest Nintendo Direct. The project arrives as fans continue to wait for Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate and builds on the success of the recent 2D-HD remakes of the original trilogy.

Unlike those remakes, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined adopts a 3D diorama-inspired aesthetic, giving dungeons and towns a handcrafted look. Characters have been redesigned with a puppet-like style, lending the game a distinct storybook charm.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Story and Gameplay Enhancements

Beyond visuals, Square Enix is revamping the narrative for smoother pacing and cohesion, while also introducing new side quests and mini-games.

Combat has been modernised with quality-of-life improvements and additions to the classic Vocation system:

  • Moonlighting – combine and equip two vocations at once
  • Let Loose – trigger a special skill when morale peaks
  • Positive Reinforcement – temporarily summon monsters into battle

Updated UI elements and refinements are also designed to make the game more approachable without losing the depth that defined the original.

Release Date and Platforms

With a striking new visual identity and modernised systems, the remake aims to deliver a fresh yet faithful experience for both long-time fans and newcomers to the series.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined launches worldwide on February 5 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
