Prototype Steam Update Fuels Remaster Speculation

Prototype’s Legacy as an Anti-Hero Power Fantasy

Radical Entertainment and Activision’s Prototype series was once a standout in open-world action, letting players revel in shapeshifting, consuming enemies, and tearing through New York City.

Both the 2009 original and the sequel won a devoted following, but the franchise went dormant after the second entry — until now.

A Surprise Update Sparks Speculation

In 2025, both games unexpectedly received a 600 MB Steam update. No patch notes were released, but mods that had functioned for years suddenly broke, sending dataminers digging for answers.

Clues Point to a Remaster

Their findings revealed more than routine fixes. Updated credits now reference a “Ubisoft Connect Version,” despite no prior involvement from Ubisoft. Activision’s support teams, including Beenox and Demonware, are also listed. The most notable addition is Iron Galaxy Studios — the developer behind remasters such as Batman: Return to Arkham and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.

Iron Galaxy’s involvement has triggered intense speculation that a potential remaster may be in development, potentially signalling the series’ long-awaited return.

Silence from Activision

For now, Activision has not commented, leaving the purpose of the update unclear. It may simply be backend adjustments, but the timing — combined with Iron Galaxy’s credit — has given fans hope that Prototype might finally resurface in modernised form.
