Of Ash and Steel Revives the Art of Getting Lost
A Return to Old-School Adventure
tinyBuild and indie studio Fire & Frost are taking RPG fans back to the days of handwritten maps and real discovery with Of Ash and Steel. Launching on November 6 on PC, the game blends the nostalgic exploration of classic RPGs with the refinements of modern design.
Players take on the role of Tristian, a humble cartographer thrust into a world of danger and destiny on the mysterious island of Grayshaft. Here, there are no quest markers, no glowing arrows — only curiosity and intuition. Every path, ruin, and decision holds potential reward or ruin, making each journey uniquely personal.
Exploration Over Handholding
As a cartographer turned reluctant hero, Tristian’s journey is defined by how players choose to explore. The island of Grayshaft is alive with possibilities, from hidden settlements to perilous ruins, all waiting to be charted.

Each choice shapes Tristian’s destiny, whether through alliances, discoveries, or the mastery of combat. Players can wield powerful two-handed axes for devastating impact, rely on the agility of rapiers, or balance strength and speed with one-handed weapons like maces. A robust crafting system allows players to forge weapons, brew potions, and cook meals, often resulting in gear that rivals or surpasses scavenged loot.
“We wanted to capture the feeling of adventure games from our childhood,” said Fire & Frost in a statement. “No blinking icons. No rails. Just the joy of finding your own way.”
Steam Next Fest Demo Available Now
Before its November release, adventurers can experience the free Steam Next Fest demo, live now on Steam. The demo offers a first look at the game’s main story and several side quests, while showcasing how exploration and choice intertwine with progression.
Players can also test their mettle in the Arena Master Mode, a combat-focused challenge where gold, fame, and gear upgrades are earned through survival. This mode highlights the game’s refined battle system, rewarding experimentation with weapons, stances, and techniques.
Building Bridges Between Eras
According to Fire & Frost, Of Ash and Steel represents their vision of bridging “old-school charm with modern sensibilities.” The studio, a small collective of veteran developers and enthusiasts, designed the project around passion for discovery, depth, and storytelling.
For publisher tinyBuild, known for titles like The King is Watching, Graveyard Keeper, and Hello Neighbor, this collaboration continues its tradition of nurturing distinct, creative voices within the indie scene. With Of Ash and Steel, both teams aim to remind players that the most incredible adventures aren’t marked on a map, but they’re found by those brave enough to wander off it.
Of Ash and Steel launches November 6 on Steam and GOG, with a free demo available now.
