Agni: Village of Calamity Brings Classic Survival Horror Back — With a Joko Anwar Twist
The Indonesian game industry continues to gain international attention, and Agni: Village of Calamity from Separuh Interactive is shaping up to be one of its most ambitious projects yet.
Showcased as part of the ID@Xbox Showcase, the game continues to catch the eye of horror fans thanks to its chilling atmosphere, cinematic presentation, and a surprise cameo from one of Indonesia’s most celebrated filmmakers.
A Love Letter to Classic Survival Horror
Unlike most modern horror titles, Agni: Village of Calamity uses fixed-camera perspectives, a deliberate design choice by the developers to recreate the dread and claustrophobia of genre classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
The latest gameplay footage highlights the game’s tension-filled pacing, with plenty of narrow corridors, relentless enemies, and moments where every step could be your last.
Players control Agni, a young woman trapped in a cursed village haunted by grotesque monsters and unseen horrors. The trailer highlighted heart-pounding chase sequences and eerie environmental storytelling, where every flicker of light hints at lurking danger.
Joko Anwar Joins the Cast
In one of the showcase’s biggest surprises, Agni: Village of Calamity revealed that renowned Indonesian director Joko Anwar, who is known for Satan’s Slaves, Impetigore, and The Forbidden Door, will appear as an in-game character.
Anwar plays The Headman, a mysterious figure whose presence in the story remains cloaked in secrecy. While details about his role are limited, his inclusion gives the project a distinct cinematic edge and ties it closely to Indonesia’s celebrated horror tradition.
Horror Powered by Unreal Engine 5
Built on Unreal Engine 5, Agni: Village of Calamity promises detailed environments, advanced lighting, and a haunting sense of realism. Each scene is designed to evoke fear not through jump scares, but through oppressive atmosphere and visual storytelling.
Though a release date has yet to be announced, the game is confirmed for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with additional platforms yet to be confirmed.
