Project Boss Announced HoYoVerse Aims for Next-Gen Unreal Engine 5 Fantasy Realism

A New Fantasy World From the Makers of Genshin Impact

Few modern studios have shaped gaming quite like HoYoVerse. With mega-hits such as Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero, the developer has built an empire on distinctive anime aesthetics, intricate worldbuilding, and the gacha systems that fuel its global popularity.

But the company isn’t slowing down. Alongside upcoming titles Honkai: Nexus Anima and Petit Planet, the company has now unveiled another major project — currently known only by its codename: Project Boss.

Building a New World on Unreal Engine 5

According to the studio’s announcement, Project Boss is still in its early development stage. Unlike earlier internally developed titles, which use proprietary engines, this new game is being built entirely on Unreal Engine 5, aiming for photorealistic visuals and next-generation rendering.

Early teaser images depict a glowing fantasy realm with riders on horseback, dragons soaring through the clouds, and a shadowy creature born of black matter.

Its tagline promises a sweeping mythological epic:

“Ancient secrets, ferocious demons, legendary heroes…
Choose your own path, forge bonds with companions…
Rebuild the crumbling order, break the twisted covenant, and face the will of capricious gods.”

Massive Boss Battles and Smarter AI

Recruitment listings on HoYoVerse’s official site describe Project Boss as an open-world fantasy RPG that will feature:

  • Massive-scale boss battles
  • Co-op multiplayer and PvP modes
  • Intelligent, reactive NPCs
  • Next-generation animation systems
  • Ecological AI and full-terrain combat
  • Dynamic, interactive environments
  • High-fidelity visual rendering

The scale of these systems suggests that the company is pursuing its most ambitious technical project to date, potentially blending the scale of Monster Hunter with the environmental storytelling of Elden Ring, filtered through its trademark flair for character-driven fantasy.

Gacha or Premium Release?

One major question remains unanswered: will this new title follow the gacha formula, or could this mark HoYoVerse’s first foray into a premium, single-purchase RPG?

No release window or confirmed platforms have been revealed, but given its early state and scope, players can expect a long wait before stepping into its world.
