A Wild Concept That Captured Attention Immediately
When Showa American Story was first revealed two years ago, its premise alone propelled it into the spotlight. Developed by Nekcom Games in Wuhan, the project envisions an alternate future where Japan emerges as the dominant cultural and economic force in the United States. The result is a striking hybrid world filled with Showa era nostalgia, American pop culture, and absurdist flair.
The idea earned instant curiosity and became one of the most talked-about indie prospects of 2025. However, players will need to wait longer before exploring its surreal vision.
Officially Delayed to 2026
Nekcom has confirmed that Showa American Story will no longer launch in 2025. The game has been moved to a 2026 release window, with no new target date announced. According to the studio, the project has reached its final stage of development; however, more time is needed to achieve the level of quality the team is aiming for.
No updated gameplay showcase has been scheduled, although Nekcom has stated that more details will be revealed next year.
A Dead Girl’s Journey Through a Japanised America
Players step into the role of Chouko, a teenage girl who inexplicably returns from the dead. Her journey takes her across an America reshaped by Japanese cultural expansion, where neon skylines, Showa era motifs, and post-apocalyptic Americana blend into a world unlike any other.
Chouko travels with determination, a dry sense of humour, and an assortment of unconventional weapons, driving a narrative that mixes comedy, chaos, and revenge.
An RPG at Its Core
Although early trailers leaned into action-adventure spectacle, Nekcom has clarified that Showa American Story is a full RPG. Deeper progression, customisation, exploration, and narrative systems are expected to play a key role, suggesting a more ambitious structure than originally assumed.
While the delay may disappoint those who have followed the game since its announcement, the additional development time could help Nekcom deliver the polished, personality-driven experience that its premise deserves.
Showa American Story remains in development for PC and consoles, with further updates expected in 2026.
