Hollow Knight: Silksong Continues Its Momentum With Sea of Sorrow Expansion
A Defining Indie Success Story in 2025
Few games have shaped the conversation around independent development in 2025 quite like Hollow Knight: Silksong. While it did not sweep the awards at The Game Awards 2025, its influence was unmistakable.
The long-awaited sequel quickly earned a reputation as the “indie GTA,” a release so dominant that reports suggested other studios actively avoided launching alongside it.
Just as Silksong appeared to be closing out an already landmark year, Team Cherry surprised fans once again with a major content announcement that ensures the game’s momentum will continue well into the future.
Sea of Sorrow Introduces a New Ocean-Themed Region
Team Cherry has officially unveiled Sea of Sorrow, a brand-new expansion for Hollow Knight: Silksong, planned for release in 2026. The expansion introduces an entirely new sea-themed area, pushing Silksong’s world into unexplored territory while expanding its atmospheric scope.
Players can expect new bosses, additional tools and fresh challenges designed to build upon Silksong’s Metroidvania foundations. While Team Cherry has yet to outline the full scale of the expansion, the studio confirmed that more details will be shared closer to release.
A Free Expansion Across All Platforms
In a move that has drawn widespread praise, Sea of Sorrow will be released entirely free for all owners of Hollow Knight: Silksong, regardless of platform. Team Cherry has not disclosed the extent of the expansion, but the decision reinforces the studio’s long-standing reputation for generous post-launch support.
The announcement positions Sea of Sorrow as a substantial addition rather than a minor bonus update, further strengthening Silksong’s long-term value.
Additional Updates for Hollow Knight Players
Alongside the Silksong expansion, Team Cherry also confirmed updates for the original Hollow Knight. A new version is planned for Nintendo Switch 2, featuring higher frame rates, improved resolution and enhanced visual effects. Players who already own the game on the original Switch will be able to upgrade at no additional cost when the new version launches in 2026.
PC players are also receiving improvements. A new public beta introduces support for ultrawide resolutions, including 16:10 and 21:9, alongside various bug fixes and gameplay refinements.
