Sony’s Live-Service Challenges Continue

While Sony continues to dominate the single-player space, its efforts in live-service gaming have been far less consistent. Outside of a handful of successes, several multiplayer-focused projects have struggled to find long-term traction, from smaller-scale releases to more ambitious titles that failed to resonate.

Against that backdrop, Bungie remains central to Sony’s long-term live-service strategy. Acquired to spearhead that push, the studio has yet to deliver a definitive breakout under Sony ownership. Even so, Bungie appears confident that Marathon can change that perception.

Marathon Receives a Firm Release Window After Alpha Revisions

Following a delay to address extensive feedback from its alpha phase, Bungie has now confirmed that Marathon will launch in March 2026. The update was revealed in a new gameplay and feature overview video outlining how the studio has refined the experience based on early player feedback.

The footage highlights increased tactical depth and a stronger emphasis on environmental awareness. One of the more notable additions is a corpse decay system that visually indicates how long a player has been eliminated.

This mechanic is designed to feed into moment-to-moment decision-making, adding another layer of risk assessment during encounters.

Factions, Weapon Customisation and Proximity Chat

Bungie confirmed several core systems that will shape Marathon’s progression loop. Players will align with different factions, each offering distinct buffs and exclusive rewards tied to allegiance. Weapon customisation plays a significant role, with hundreds of mods planned to support varied playstyles and long-term build experimentation.

Matches can be tackled solo or in squads of up to three players, with Bungie emphasising high-stakes encounters and emergent tension. Audio design remains a key pillar of the experience, reinforced by the inclusion of Proximity Chat, a fan-requested feature now officially confirmed.

Premium Pricing Strategy Confirmed

Unlike many modern live-service titles, Marathon will launch as a premium release rather than a free-to-play product. Bungie pointed to the success of similarly priced games as evidence that the model can work when paired with strong post-launch support.

The studio has confirmed regional pricing, with the current listed prices set at US$40, €40, and £40. Additional details regarding regional adjustments are expected closer to launch.

Marathon is scheduled to release in March 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
