Among Sony’s first-party portfolio, the racing genre remains a curious outlier. While Microsoft-owned studios continue to rotate new entries and experiments within the Forza ecosystem, Sony’s modern racing presence rests almost entirely on a single title: Gran Turismo 7.
On paper, that should be a vulnerability. The game first launched in early 2022, and by industry standards, a three-year-old live game is often well past its peak. Yet GT7 continues to defy that trajectory, maintaining a level of engagement that few expected this late into its lifecycle.
Gran Turismo 7 Still Attracts Over 2 Million Monthly Players
As reported by Automaton, during the Gran Turismo World Series 2025 World Final, series producer Kazunori Yamauchi revealed that Gran Turismo 7 still draws more than 2 million active players every month.
According to Yamauchi, the figure reflects not just retained players but a steady influx of new ones, resulting in what he described as the strongest user base in the history of the franchise. The admission came with a note of surprise, as Yamauchi acknowledged that neither he nor Sony anticipated this level of sustained momentum.
A major factor behind the longevity is the live-service cadence. Regular updates introducing new cars, tracks, and refinements have kept the game relevant well beyond its launch window, keeping both competitive players and casual racers engaged.

Paid DLC Finds an Audience
Yamauchi also confirmed that Sony’s relatively cautious approach to paid content has paid off. Gran Turismo 7’s premium Power Pack DLC, which focuses on expanded customisation options, has reportedly performed well, validating Sony’s decision to supplement free updates with selective paid offerings.
At present, the game boasts an expansive catalogue of over 550 cars and more than 121 racing courses, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most content-rich racing simulators available on modern hardware.
A Lone, Thriving Flagship
While Sony’s broader racing strategy remains thin compared to competitors’, Gran Turismo 7‘s continued performance suggests that Polyphony Digital’s flagship still carries considerable weight. Rather than fading quietly, the game has evolved into a long-term platform, one that continues to grow even as the surrounding genre accelerates.
For now, Sony’s lone racing title stands as proof that consistency, cadence, and community can sometimes matter more than sheer release volume.
