Genigods: Nezha Brings Chinese Genesis Myth to Life in a New Unreal Engine 5 RPG

Genigods: Nezha Reveals an Ambitious Action RPG Built on Chinese Myth

Chinese mythology continues to gain momentum in big-budget game development, and Genigods: Nezha is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious examples yet. Developer Genigods Lab has officially revealed its new single-player action RPG, confirming a 2028 launch window for PlayStation 5 and PC.

Built in Unreal Engine 5 and optimised in collaboration with Sony for PS5, the game is positioned as a premium experience leaning firmly toward hardcore action RPG design rather than live-service or gacha-driven structures.

From Creation to Deity in Chinese Genesis Mythology

Genigods: Nezha is set in Chinese creation mythology, beginning not with a hero but with creation itself. Players take on the role of the Spirit Pearl, the first spark of life forged by Nüwa, the Goddess of Life, from earth, water, and fire.

The narrative charts a sweeping transformation. Players evolve from a celestial artefact into the first human, a woman shaped from clay and water, before ultimately being reborn as Nezha, the legendary rebel deity. Along the way, iconic mythological figures such as Yi, the sun-feller, and Yu, the flood-tamer, play key roles in shaping the journey.

A central companion, the Heart of Sacred Water, grows alongside the player. This sentient gift from Nüwa supports puzzle-solving, exploration, and combat, while also gradually revealing the darker truths behind the world’s creation.

Celestial Combat Across Heaven and Earth

Combat is designed around large-scale, high-mobility encounters that shift seamlessly between ground and aerial combat. Players can switch between dual stances, chain devastating mid-air strikes, and temporarily awaken mythic abilities to unleash powerful combos.

The game also embraces scale in a literal sense. Players will climb colossal gods whose bodies form the battlefield itself, battling enemies while traversing enormous living structures. One highlight teased in the reveal involves scaling the Sun Tree with the help of the giant Kuafu, before confronting the Nine Suns in a climactic mythological confrontation.

Water Philosophy and Reactive Combat Design

At the heart of Genigods: Nezha’s combat system is a philosophy inspired by Bruce Lee’s “Be Water” approach. Nezha’s abilities are fuelled by Divine Water, allowing attacks to adapt fluidly to the situation.

Techniques draw inspiration from Jeet Kune Do, encouraging reactive, timing-based play. Players can condense water into precise armour-breaking strikes or release it in sweeping attacks designed for crowd control. Perfect parries and counters are central to mastery, rewarding defensive awareness as much as aggression.

A Veteran Studio With Big Ambitions

Genigods Lab is no newcomer to large-scale production. The studio’s roughly 100-person team previously developed the Sony-published My Hero Academia mobile title, as well as the Condor Heroes series, which has surpassed 10 million downloads worldwide.

With Genigods: Nezha, the studio is making a clear push into premium console and PC development, aiming to deliver a myth-driven action RPG that stands alongside other modern genre heavyweights. It continues the surge in Chinese developers establishing themselves globally, with the newly revealed A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei as another example.

Genigods: Nezha is currently scheduled to launch in 2028 for PlayStation 5 and PC. No specific release date has been announced.
