What began as a bold and controversial pivot has since become one of the most lucrative live-service success stories in modern gaming. GTA Online has evolved into a long-term revenue pillar for Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive, sustained by consistent updates and a player base that continues to return in force more than a decade after launch.

Its enduring popularity has even been cited as a factor in Grand Theft Auto V never receiving traditional single-player DLC. With the live-service experience still performing at scale, Take-Two appears in no rush to sunset the experience.

That position was reinforced by Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick during the company’s latest financial report. While Zelnick reiterated that creative and marketing decisions ultimately rest with Rockstar Games, he made it clear that GTA Online is not expected to simply end once GTA VI launches.

From Take-Two’s perspective, the size and consistency of GTA Online’s community make continued support a logical business decision. The publisher sees little reason to abandon a live-service ecosystem that still demonstrates strong engagement and monetisation potential.

Player Engagement Data Backs the Strategy

Zelnick’s confidence is grounded in performance data rather than speculation. According to him, GTA Online players reliably return whenever Rockstar delivers compelling new content, regardless of the mode’s age.

A recent example is the “A Safehouse in the Hills” update, which reintroduced GTA V protagonist Michael De Santa as an older character integrated into the ongoing narrative. The update showed that legacy characters can still meaningfully drive interest when placed in new story arcs.

New Updates Continue to Drive Spending Growth

Take-Two highlighted that the update contributed to a 27%increase in GTA-related player spending, exceeding internal expectations. The result further reinforces the publisher’s belief that the online component remains commercially relevant even as the franchise prepares for its next major chapter.

Rockstar Games has also reaffirmed that GTA VI remains on track to launch on November 19. Both physical and digital versions are confirmed to be released simultaneously, putting earlier speculation about staggered launches to rest.
