HBO Reportedly Developing a Baldur’s Gate TV Series
Larian Studios has spent years building a reputation as one of the most respected Western RPG developers in the industry, but Baldur’s Gate 3 elevated the studio into true mainstream prominence. Its dense role-playing systems, branching narratives, and character-driven storytelling resonated far beyond the usual RPG audience. Now, that success appears to be opening the door to a major television adaptation.
According to a report from Deadline, HBO is currently in development on a Baldur’s Gate television series. Rather than retelling an existing story or loosely adapting the franchise’s lore, the project is said to be positioning itself as a continuation of the latest game.
A Direct Narrative Continuation
Unlike many game-to-TV adaptations that opt for standalone stories, HBO’s reported plan is to treat the series as a direct sequel. The show is expected to pick up after the ending of Baldur’s Gate 3, dealing with the fallout of the player’s choices and the broader consequences left behind in the Forgotten Realms.
Several characters from the game are expected to return, alongside new faces introduced specifically for the series. The approach suggests HBO is leaning into the narrative weight rather than resetting the world for television audiences, an ambitious decision given how variable the game’s endings can be.
Craig Mazin Set to Lead the Project
The report also indicates that Craig Mazin is attached to helm the series. Mazin is best known for HBO’s Chernobyl and for steering the first two seasons of The Last of Us, both of which were widely praised for their writing, tone, and respect for their source material.
Mazin is reportedly being given creative control over the series’ story, though he will not be working in isolation. Hasbro has appointed Chris Perkins, Head of Story at Wizards of the Coast, as a consultant to help ensure consistency with the wider Dungeons & Dragons universe and its established lore.
A Passion Project with Deep Familiarity
Mazin has previously spoken publicly about his enthusiasm for the game, revealing that he has spent over 1,000 hours playing the game. He has described it as one of the most impressive RPG experiences ever made, particularly in how it empowers players to shape their own stories.
That familiarity could prove crucial if HBO follows through on adapting a sequel narrative. Mazin has also expressed interest in involving the original voice cast in some capacity, though no formal casting decisions have been announced.
At this stage, the Baldur’s Gate series remains early in development. HBO has not confirmed a release window, episode count, or casting details.
