Yakuza Kiwami Line Concludes, New Series Teased by RGG Producer

Masayoshi Yokoyama confirms Yakuza Kiwami 3 is the last Kiwami remake. RGG Studio plans a new series direction instead of moving directly to Like a Dragon 9.

RGG Studio Confirms End of the Kiwami Line

The Kiwami label has become one of SEGA and RGG Studio’s most distinctive remake initiatives, successfully modernising classic Yakuza titles for a new generation. Across its existing entries, the line refreshed older games with upgraded visuals, refined mechanics, and expanded narrative content.

Powered by the Dragon Engine, these remakes did more than simply enhance graphics. They reworked character models, rebalanced combat systems, and introduced new story elements that complemented the originals.

However, it now appears that this particular project line has concluded.

Official Confirmation from Masayoshi Yokoyama

Franchise producer Masayoshi Yokoyama confirmed the decision during the latest episode of RGG Studio TV. Yokoyama, who assumed leadership of the Yakuza and Like a Dragon series following Toshihiro Nagoshi’s departure, stated that RGG Studio will not continue the Kiwami line beyond Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties.

According to Yokoyama, the studio has chosen to focus its resources elsewhere, marking a significant shift in long-term franchise strategy.

A New Series Direction Takes Priority

Rather than immediately developing Like a Dragon 9, RGG Studio is reportedly working on an entirely new series line with a different thematic direction.

Yokoyama suggested that players may gain greater clarity about this transition after completing Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties, which launched recently. He emphasised that the move aligns with a broader strategic roadmap for the franchise’s future.

The announcement has sparked immediate discussion within the community. Some fans have raised questions about the future of Ichiban Kasuga, the current protagonist of the mainline series, while others speculate that narrative elements such as the shadowy Daidoji faction could take on a more prominent role.

For now, RGG Studio has not revealed further details regarding the new series concept or its timeline.
