NBA The Run Confirms June 2026 Launch and a May 1 Closed Beta

Play by Play Studios, the NBA, and the NBPA have announced that NBA The Run, a 3v3 streetball game, will be launching in June. The reveal comes alongside the first official gameplay trailer, showcasing a fast-paced, arcade-leaning experience built around above-the-rim finishes, quick defensive rotations, and highlight-heavy plays.

The studio is also moving quickly into hands-on testing. Sign-ups are open now for the first closed beta playtest, scheduled for May 1 on Steam.

The Core Hook Is a Global Knockout Tournament Structure

At the centre of NBA The Run is the Run the World Tournament, described as a four-round knockout format where 3-player teams compete across iconic streetball courts around the world. Each tournament culminates in a championship match at one of four finals courts, with the Run the World trophy positioned as the headline reward.

Structurally, the knockout framing is designed for repeatable sessions rather than long league seasons. It prioritises short bursts of high-pressure play, where a single bad run can end a bracket, naturally encouraging quick rematches and mastery of specific courts and matchups.

Three Launch Modes, Built Around Different Levels of Control

NBA The Run will ship with three modes at launch, each built around how much control and coordination the player wants:

  • Knockout Squads: Control one player in a 3-person squad, teaming with friends or other players.
  • Knockout Solos: Build and control a full team of three, competing against other player-built teams.
  • Knockout Friends: A private tournament format supporting AI matches, co-op against AI, or invited head-to-head play, with up to 48 players supported at launch.

The split is practical. Squads is for social competitive play, Solos is for players who want full roster control, and Friends is the flexible mode designed for custom lobbies and lower-pressure sessions.

Roster, Netcode, and the Competitive Foundation

At launch, players can choose from 30+ NBA stars alongside five fictional streetball legends, each with distinct playstyles and a stylised visual approach. The focus is not on authenticity. It is character readability and move identity, closer to classic arcade sports DNA than broadcast realism.

NBA The Run Lebron James

Technically, the most important promise in NBA The Run is rollback netcode, positioned as the foundation for consistent online play. In a fast 3v3 game where timing matters for steals, blocks, and alley-oops, rollback is not a luxury feature. It is the difference between competitive credibility and frustration.

NBA The Run launches in June 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The first closed beta playtest runs May 1 on Steam, with sign-ups available now.
