Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Reveals a More Action-Driven Prequel

Focus Entertainment and Asobo Studio have released an extended gameplay trailer for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, giving players a deeper look at the next chapter in the acclaimed action-adventure series.

The new trailer runs for around seven minutes and shows how far Resonance is moving from the slower, stealth-driven structure of earlier A Plague Tale games. Stealth and tension remain important, but this prequel places greater emphasis on direct combat, agility, and aggressive survival.

The Reveal Brought A Plague Tale Back at Xbox Games Showcase

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy first came to the spotlight during the Xbox Games Showcase, where Focus Entertainment and Asobo Studio confirmed its August 27 release date.

That reveal mattered because the game had been quiet for around a year, leaving fans to wonder how Asobo would continue the A Plague Tale universe after Amicia and Hugo’s story. Rather than following the same structure directly, Resonance shifts focus to Sophia, a younger version of the smuggler players met in A Plague Tale: Requiem.

Set 15 years before the events of Requiem, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy follows Sophia as she searches for answers about her past on the mysterious Minotaur’s Island. It is still tied to the series’ wider mythology, but the reveal made it clear that this is not simply another Amicia-style journey with a new lead.

Sophia Brings Faster Combat and New Tools

The extended gameplay trailer shows Sophia facing larger groups of enemies with a more physical combat style than previous protagonists. Players will need to rely on precise parries, quick attacks, and careful timing with Sophia’s dagger and sword. Her grappling hook also gives the combat a stronger environmental edge, letting her pull enemies, reposition threats, and turn nearby hazards into part of the fight.

That does not mean Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy has abandoned the series’ familiar tension. Instead, Asobo appears to be building a more capable protagonist around the same sense of danger, where being stronger does not necessarily make the world feel safe.

Light Puzzles Drive Exploration on Minotaur’s Island

Away from combat, Resonance keeps puzzle-solving at the centre of exploration. Sophia will encounter ancient puzzles built around manipulating light, with these challenges tied to the deeper secrets of Minotaur’s Island. The trailer suggests that exploration will still require observation, patience, and environmental awareness, even as combat becomes more active.

That balance should be important for longtime fans. A Plague Tale has always worked best when its danger, storytelling, and puzzle design reinforce one another, rather than feeling like separate systems.

Theseus Connects the Story Across Two Eras

The new story also introduces a dual timeline mystery. As Sophia explores the island, she begins experiencing flashbacks to the Minoan era. These visions connect her to Theseus, the legendary hero who lived more than 2,000 years before her time.

Through Theseus, players will face a second layer of trials as they uncover how the two eras are linked. Focus Entertainment has also teased a terrifying presence moving through the island’s shadows, suggesting that the game’s mythological angle will still carry the dread and mystery expected from A Plague Tale.

Pre-orders are now available for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. After its reveal at Xbox Games Showcase and this longer gameplay breakdown, Asobo’s next project is looking like a sharper, more combat-focused take on the series without fully leaving its unsettling identity behind.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launches on August 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game will also be available on day one on Xbox Game Pass and will support Xbox Play Anywhere.
