Death Stranding Movie Update Points To A New Story, Not A Retelling
The Death Stranding movie remains one of the more unusual video game adaptations currently in development, but its direction is starting to make more sense. Rather than turning Hideo Kojima’s original game into a straightforward live-action retelling, director Michael Sarnoski is approaching the film as a new story set within the same universe.
That feels like the smarter path for Death Stranding, a game whose strange atmosphere, themes of connection, and long stretches of silence would not naturally fit a conventional blockbuster structure. The film is being developed by A24 and Kojima Productions, with Sarnoski writing and directing.
Sarnoski is best known for Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, both of which make him an interesting match for a project that needs scale, mood and restraint.
Michael Sarnoski Wants His Own Corner Of Death Stranding
In an interview with Variety, Sarnoski shared that he is still working on the script, with A24 already having read a draft and revisions now underway. More importantly, he confirmed that the Death Stranding movie will not simply follow Sam Porter Bridges’ journey from the game. Instead, Sarnoski described it as a story built around his own characters and his own corner of the world.
That approach gives the film more freedom. This is a universe built on mood, mystery and surreal rules, which means a direct adaptation could risk becoming either too literal or too overloaded with explanation. By moving away from a direct retelling, the film can preserve the spirit of Death Stranding without compressing the game’s full journey into a single feature.

Familiar Game Characters Could Still Appear
While the movie will focus on original characters, Sarnoski also teased that viewers may still see some characters from the game appear. He has not confirmed who those characters will be, which means there is no word yet on whether figures like Sam, Fragile, Higgs or Deadman will play any meaningful role. It also remains unclear whether any of the game’s original actors will return for the live-action film.
Still, the idea of familiar characters appearing without dominating the story could be a strong compromise. It gives longtime fans something to look forward to, while keeping the film accessible to audiences who have never played the games.
For a world that is so dense, that balance will matter. The movie needs to feel connected to Kojima’s universe, but it also needs to work on its own terms.
A24 Could Be The Right Home For Kojima’s World
Death Stranding was never an obvious choice for a traditional video game movie, which is exactly why A24’s involvement remains interesting. Kojima has previously said he did not want the adaptation to become a loud, spectacle-first blockbuster. With A24 attached and Sarnoski leading the project, the film seems more likely to lean into atmosphere, character and uneasy beauty rather than trying to turn Death Stranding into a standard sci-fi action film.
That does not make the adaptation easy. The game is built around loneliness, human connection, strange landscapes and ideas that often feel more emotional than literal. Translating that into live-action will require more than just recreating the game’s imagery.
For now, the project does not have an official release window. What it does have is a clearer creative direction, and for a Death Stranding movie, that may be the most important update so far.
