God of War Laufey Physical Release Gives Fans a Key Timing Clue

Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that God of War Laufey will receive a physical disc release, giving fans one of the clearest clues yet about when the next PlayStation exclusive could arrive.

The confirmation comes at an interesting time. Sony recently announced that physical disc production for new PlayStation games will end from January 2028, with future releases shifting to digital formats through PlayStation Store and retailers.

That makes a disc version of God of War Laufey more meaningful than it would have been a few years ago. Santa Monica Studio has not announced a release date, but if PlayStation’s physical media roadmap remains unchanged, the confirmation strongly suggests the game is intended to arrive before the January 2028 cut-off.

Santa Monica Has Not Announced a Release Date

The important caveat is that this is not an official launch date announcement. Sony has only listed God of War Laufey as coming soon to PlayStation 5. A physical edition points towards a likely pre-2028 release, but it does not confirm whether the game will arrive in 2026, 2027, or closer to the deadline.

Still, the timing aligns with existing speculation that Faye’s adventure may not be as far off as some players initially assumed. For physical collectors, the confirmation is reassuring as well. God of War: Laufey now looks set to be one of the last major PlayStation exclusives to receive a traditional boxed release.

Faye Takes the Lead in the Everywhen

Unlike God of War Ragnarök, God of War Laufey will not continue directly with Kratos as the main playable character. The game shifts the spotlight to Laufey, better known to fans as Faye, Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mother. Santa Monica has described the game as a continuation of the timeline rather than a simple prequel, with Faye awakening in the Everywhen after her death.

The Everywhen is described as a strange realm where gods, creatures, and magic from different mythologies converge. Faye will encounter hostile figures such as Sekhmet and Begtse while trying to understand whether the realm is a paradise, a prison, or something more complex.

Combat also looks designed to give Faye a different feel from Kratos. Santa Monica says her style builds on the modern God of War system while adding more agility, aerial movement, and faster momentum. As the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, Faye can also use soul-based abilities in combat.

A Major PlayStation Release Before the Disc Cut-Off

For now, God of War Laufey remains without a firm release date. However, the physical edition confirmation changes the conversation. It does not guarantee an exact window, but it does make a post-January 2028 launch much harder to imagine unless Sony makes an exception.

For a game already carrying huge interest because of Faye’s long-awaited playable role, the disc confirmation gives fans another reason to watch the next major PlayStation showcase closely.
