Tomb Raider: Catalyst 2028 Window Suggested by Amazon Games Boss

Tomb Raider: Catalyst may no longer be targeting its original 2027 release window, although Amazon Games is not officially confirming a delay just yet.

The next original Tomb Raider adventure was announced in December as part of a wider franchise revival alongside Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a modern reimagining of Lara Croft’s 1996 debut. At the time, Legacy of Atlantis was planned for 2026, while Catalyst was set for 2027.

That schedule has already shifted once, with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis now moved to February 2027. Now, it appears Tomb Raider: Catalyst may also have moved later than expected.

Amazon Games Comment Points to 2028

The latest uncertainty comes from Amazon Games boss Jeffrey Gattis, who appeared on The Game Business Podcast and discussed the publisher’s upcoming Tomb Raider slate. While speaking about the series, Gattis referred to Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis arriving in February next year, before adding that Amazon would “follow on in 2028 with the next one.”

That comment has been widely read as a reference to Tomb Raider: Catalyst, which was previously announced for 2027. If accurate, that would push Lara Croft’s next fully original adventure back by around a year. However, Amazon Games has since stopped short of confirming that timing.

Amazon Says Development Is Progressing Well

After the podcast comment, Amazon Games told Gematsu that it did not have anything new to share about Tomb Raider: Catalyst’s release timing. The publisher added that development is progressing well and that more details will be shared closer to launch. That leaves the situation in an awkward middle ground. A 2028 release now seems possible, but it has not been formally announced.

For now, the safest reading is that Tomb Raider: Catalyst remains in development, but its public release window is no longer as clear as it was when the game was first revealed.

Catalyst Is an All-New Lara Croft Adventure

Unlike Legacy of Atlantis, Tomb Raider: Catalyst is not a remake. The game is being developed by Crystal Dynamics as a new adventure set across Northern India, with Lara Croft investigating recently unearthed secrets after a mythical cataclysm. Amazon previously described it as the largest Tomb Raider game to date, powered by Unreal Engine 5.

While Legacy of Atlantis gives fans a modern return to Lara’s roots, Catalyst is the project meant to push the series forward with a new setting, new mystery, and a more confident version of Lara.

A Longer Wait May Not Be Surprising

A move into 2028 would be disappointing, but not entirely shocking. Crystal Dynamics and Amazon are now effectively handling 2 major Tomb Raider projects, each serving a different purpose. One is a full reimagining of the original game, while the other is a new mainline adventure expected to carry the franchise beyond nostalgia.

Spacing them out may make sense. Launching both too close together could split attention, while giving Catalyst more time may help it avoid feeling rushed after years of anticipation. Still, fans will want clarity soon. Tomb Raider has spent a long time rebuilding momentum, and release-window uncertainty is never ideal when the series finally looks active again.

For now, Tomb Raider: Catalyst remains in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Whether Lara Croft returns in 2027 or 2028 now depends on when Amazon Games is ready to give a proper update.
