Xbox Games Showcase: South of Midnight Impresses WIth Gorgeous Adventure Platforming

Xbox Games Showcase South of Midnight Impresses with Gorgeous Adventure Platforming

The third-person adventure genre has plenty going for it, but it seems that there really isn’t something quite like South of Midnight, the latest project by Compulsion Games, who gave us We Happy Few back in 2018. First announced in 2023, the Xbox Games Showcase gave us a better look at the game, which takes place in the gothic surroundings of Prospero in America.

As Hazel, players will explore the mythos and encounter creatures of Southern folklore in a macabre and fantastical world. With her abilities as a Weaver, a magical mender of broken bonds and spirits, it is her job to confront and subdue dangerous creatures, and at the same time, untangle the webs of her family’s past as she attempts to find a home for herself.

The biggest attraction in the trailer has to be the cinematics, which take a stop-motion approach similar to Into The Spider-Verse. Meanwhile, the action remains a buttery smooth experience out in the swamps. Fighting what looked like a creature from the Souls game is always a plus in our books, and it all melds together into one truly exciting project.

South of Midnight Gameplay

With such a seemingly strong foundation, all that’s left is to have a complementary narrative to help bring things to a satisfying end. Whether that will happen is still a question, but at least for now, we can keep our anticipation high for South of Midnight when it eventually arrives on both Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2025.
