Take-Two Escalates Its Hunt for the GTA VI Leaker
The mystery surrounding the recent Grand Theft Auto VI leaks is escalating, with Take-Two Interactive turning to the US legal system to identify whoever is behind the Cyberleek persona. A series of unreleased GTA VI gameplay clips have appeared online throughout August under the Cyberleek handle, showing previously unseen activities and parts of Rockstar’s upcoming open-world game.
According to Kotaku, Take-Two has now filed multiple requests in federal district court seeking DMCA subpoenas requiring Microsoft and Discord to provide records associated with accounts involved in distributing the leaked material.
Take-Two Wants Records Linked to Cyberleek
The legal requests give a clearer idea of just how aggressively Take-Two is pursuing the investigation. Take-Two is seeking account IDs, registration emails, IP addresses, phone numbers, linked accounts and certain device identifiers from relevant Microsoft accounts. Its request also asks for OneDrive content related to terms such as GTA, Rockstar, and Cyberleek.
The company is similarly seeking information from Discord about accounts communicating within several identified servers and communities connected to the spread of the leaks.
One petition reportedly gives Microsoft until September 4 to provide records from its internal investigation that could help identify the person or group operating as Cyberleek. Take-Two states that the information would be used to identify alleged copyright infringers and protect its rights.
Rockstar Reportedly Still Does Not Know Who Cyberleek Is
Despite those efforts, Rockstar reportedly remains uncertain about who is behind Cyberleek or how the individual or group gained access to unreleased footage. A separate Kotaku report, citing Bloomberg, claims it is currently “all hands on deck” internally as Rockstar investigates the source of the breach.
The footage may have originated from an early build of GTA VI, although exactly how it was obtained remains unclear. Cyberleek has also used the attention surrounding the leaks to promote a cryptocurrency and a manifesto criticising practices including digital pre-orders and content locked behind paid DLC.
GTA VI Extended Look Is Still Going Ahead
The leaks are not expected to derail Rockstar’s existing marketing plans.The Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look presentation remains scheduled for August 27, with Rockstar’s official website listing the showcase for 3 PM ET.
For now, Take-Two’s legal requests suggest the company is no longer relying solely on copyright takedowns to contain the leaks. Finding out who Cyberleek actually is has become the bigger priority.
