The Witcher IV Release Window Is Now Targeting 2028
CD Projekt Red has finally given players a clearer idea of when The Witcher IV could arrive, confirming that the next mainline entry is currently targeting a 2028 release.
Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski revealed the window in a message ahead of Gamescom 2026 and confirmed that more than 500 developers are currently working on the project.
Ciri will lead the new saga, with CD Projekt Red describing the game as its biggest, boldest and most ambitious project to date. The studio is promising a huge open world, intense action RPG combat and a story built to leave a lasting impact on players. For anyone hoping to see more of it at Gamescom, however, there is a catch: The Witcher IV itself will not be shown at the event.
Songs of the Past Will Be the Big Witcher Gamescom Showcase
Instead, CD Projekt Red is putting the spotlight on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, the upcoming third expansion.
The expansion will appear during Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25 before receiving its first full showcase on the show floor from August 26. Attendees will be able to watch guided presentations at CD Projekt Red’s booth rather than play the expansion themselves.
Songs of the Past brings Geralt back for a new adventure more than a decade after the original game launched. It is being co-developed by Fool’s Theory, whose team includes developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD Projekt Red has also confirmed that the expansion will launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
More Than 500 Developers Are Working on The Witcher IV
While Songs of the Past gives players something to look forward to sooner, The Witcher IV remains the long-term focus. Nowakowski says more than 500 developers are currently involved in the project, which is being built using Unreal Engine 5 and will begin a new Witcher saga with Ciri at the helm.
The 2028 window also reinforces just how much development still lies ahead. CD Projekt Red is not ready to commit to a specific release date, with Nowakowski asking fans to give the team time to finish what it is building. That patience may be necessary, but the studio is at least giving players a clearer roadmap now.
The Witcher Has Plenty Coming Before 2028
There is still a sizeable gap before Ciri’s next major adventure arrives, but CD Projekt Red clearly intends to keep the franchise active in the meantime. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past arrives in 2027, with Gamescom giving players the first substantial look at what Geralt’s return will involve.
After that, the baton passes to Ciri. With more than 500 developers already working on The Witcher IV and a 2028 target now publicly established, CD Projekt Red has finally put a rough destination on one of the most anticipated RPGs still in development.
