Sword Sage: Awakening Shows More of Its Mythology-Fuelled Action
SwordPandaGames and 4Divinity have brought Sword Sage: Awakening back into the spotlight at Gamescom 2026, revealing a new trailer during the Future Games Show. The latest footage provides an extended look at protagonist Pei Sanniang, her fast-paced sword combat, and the Yaoguai that threaten a world shaped by Chinese mythology and folklore.
Set a thousand years after forbidden celestial texts were accidentally unleashed upon humanity, Sword Sage: Awakening follows Pei Sanniang, a young disciple of the Yuangong Sect tasked with confronting the monsters and disasters left behind.
There is a little more going on than traditional fantasy, however. SwordPandaGames describes the wider journey as one where Chinese mythology collides with science fiction, with ancient landscapes sitting alongside unusual mechanical creations.
Pei Sanniang Takes the Fight to the Yaoguai
Combat remains the main attraction in the new trailer. Pei Sanniang fights using the secret sword techniques of the Yuangong Sect, combining traditional swordsmanship with martial arts, Taoist spells and mystical artefacts.
The wider combat system revolves around reading attacks and responding with precise defensive movements before striking back. Different weapons and techniques also give Pei Sanniang several ways to approach the Yaoguai, rather than relying on a single fixed style.
The Gamescom footage moves between smaller enemies and considerably larger supernatural threats, with the fast animation and counter-focused swordplay suggesting that timing will be just as important as aggression.
Sword Sage: Awakening Mixes Xianxia With Science-Fiction
Beyond all the blade work, the trailer offers another look at the landscapes surrounding Pei Sanniang’s journey. Ancient temples, bamboo forests and winding mountain paths establish its Xianxia influences, while the world itself has been shaped by centuries of supernatural disasters and humanity’s attempts to survive them.
That has resulted in what SwordPandaGames calls a journey where mythology meets science fiction, with Pei Sanniang gradually uncovering the truth behind the celestial texts and the Yaoguai they unleashed. The studio itself includes developers with experience on games such as Far Cry 3, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Tom Clancy’s The Division and F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch.
Sword Sage: Awakening Is Still Coming Soon
Sword Sage: Awakening currently has no confirmed release date, with its Steam page continuing to list the game as “Coming soon”. For now, PC is the platform confirmed through the latest press release, with wishlisting already available on Steam.

The Gamescom trailer does at least make the pitch considerably clearer: a fast-moving action RPG built around Chinese folklore, martial arts and supernatural monsters, with just enough science-fiction weirdness lurking underneath to make Pei Sanniang’s journey worth keeping an eye on.
