PixelJunk Monsters 3 Returns at Gamescom 2026
Q-Games is returning to one of its best-known series with PixelJunk Monsters 3, officially revealed during the Future Games Show at Gamescom 2026. The new entry is being developed as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations for PixelJunk Monsters, returning to the hand-drawn visual style of the original while introducing roguelike elements to its familiar tower defence formula.
Players will once again run around the battlefield themselves, building and upgrading towers before dancing around them to help strengthen their defences against incoming waves of Monsters. The announcement was one of many coming out of Cologne this week, with more reveals available through our ongoing Gamescom 2026 coverage.
PixelJunk Monsters 3 Returns to Hand-Drawn Visuals
After experimenting with a different visual direction in PixelJunk Monsters 2, the third game is heading back towards its roots. Q-Games is using hand-drawn artwork presented in 4K, bringing the colourful forests, characters and invading Monsters to life with considerably more detail.
The underlying idea remains comfortably familiar. Players need to protect their home from waves of creatures by building the right towers in the right places, while personally moving around the map to collect resources and improve those defences. New towers, enemies and boss battles are also promised.
Roguelike Elements Add More Uncertainty to Each Defence
The bigger mechanical change comes through new roguelike systems. Q-Games has yet to explain exactly how extensive these additions will be, but they are intended to introduce more strategic variety and replayability rather than replacing the tower defence foundation.
Cooperative play is returning too, with two players able to defend together either online or locally. That means the traditional couch cooperative experience remains intact alongside solo play.
PixelJunk Monsters 3 Playtest Begins September 4
Players will not have to wait long to try it. Q-Games is holding a free PC playtest from September 4 to September 9, running for 120 hours as part of the studio’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Participation is limited to members of the official Q-Games Discord server.

Almost 20 years after Tikiman first started frantically building towers and dancing beside them, Q-Games appears happy to return to what made PixelJunk Monsters distinctive in the first place, while adding just enough unpredictability to keep the next defence interesting.
PixelJunk Monsters 3 is currently confirmed for PC through Steam, with no release date announced.
