Shutter Story Horror Game Turns Photo Editing Into Paranormal Investigation

Most horror games ask you to run, hide or fight back. Frostwood Interactive’s Shutter Story gives you photo-editing software instead. Coming to Steam in Q1 2027, the single-player horror game follows Eli, who is convinced his family is being haunted.

His parents dismiss the strange occurrences as an overactive imagination, leaving you, a budding photo editor, to search through the family’s photographs and home videos for actual evidence. The result is a paranormal investigation conducted largely through a fictional piece of early-2000s software called SpectralAware 2.1.

Finding the Horror Is Only Half the Problem

Players can adjust exposure, contrast and noise while applying different filters to uncover faces, figures and other anomalies hiding within seemingly ordinary images.

Finding something suspicious does not automatically mean you are right, however. A detailed manual helps classify discoveries into categories including Apparitions, Simulacra, Strange Lights and Demonic Entities, and incorrect answers can have consequences for Eli and his family.

That gives Shutter Story an interesting twist on investigative horror. You are not simply hunting for the creepy thing hidden in the background, but deciding exactly what you think you have found. The photo analysis is also broken up by first-person sequences inside Eli’s house, allowing the paranormal activity uncovered through the computer to gradually spill into the environment around you.

For anyone keeping an eye on smaller horror projects, it joins recent releases such as Singapore-made The Last Cosmonaut in finding a distinct mechanical hook rather than relying entirely on conventional survival horror.

Shutter Story Has a Free Steam Demo

A free Shutter Story demo is available through Steam, covering roughly the opening 45 minutes. It includes 15 photographs, three videos and three first-person exploration sections, offering a fairly substantial introduction to how its investigation works.

The full version of Shutter Story is planned for Q1 2027 on PC, with wishlisting now available.
