The Escapists 3 Takes Prison Breaks Into Full 3D
The inmates are heading back behind bars, with Team17 officially revealing The Escapists 3 for PC and consoles in 2027. Announced during The Triple-i Initiative Showcase, the sequel keeps the series’ familiar mix of crafting, stealth, and increasingly questionable escape plans, but makes one major change: the prisons are now fully 3D.
Players will have five distinct facilities to escape from, each with its own routines, characters and secrets. Getting out still means learning guard rotations, gathering supplies, and exploiting whatever weaknesses you can find, though plans involving brute force or molten chocolate apparently remain perfectly valid options.
More Than 120 Weapons and Plenty of Ways Out
The Escapists 3 continues to emphasise open-ended escapes rather than giving players one prescribed solution. Inmates can search cells, trade with other prisoners, and take jobs to gather useful materials, with more than 120 weapons to steal or craft.
Those tools can then feed into escape plans involving digging, fighting, sneaking and other methods that will presumably seem much smarter before everything inevitably goes wrong. The move into 3D should also give those systems considerably more room to work, while maintaining the sandbox structure that defined the previous games.
XP Progression Carries Between Prisons
One of the biggest new additions is a persistent XP and skill system. Players gain experience as they play, unlocking abilities and new gameplay options that let inmates specialise in specific escape areas. Those skills carry forward between prisons, adding a broader progression layer beyond simply learning each facility’s layout.
Co-op is returning too. Two players can attempt a breakout together through local split-screen, while online multiplayer supports up to four inmates. That means escape plans can be divided among different roles and skill sets, as long as everyone sticks to the plan once the guards start noticing something is wrong.
After years away, the basic philosophy remains refreshingly familiar: watch the guards, collect anything useful, and turn an otherwise ordinary day in prison into a needlessly elaborate route to freedom.
The Escapists 3 is currently scheduled to launch on PC and consoles in 2027, but Team17 has not yet announced a more specific release date.
