Volatiles Roguelike Makes Building the Battlefield Part of Your Build
Team Instant Defeat and 11 bit studios have revealed Volatiles, a new top-down action roguelike where surviving alien hordes is only half the problem. Players also have to decide exactly what the battlefield looks like.
Every run begins on a single tile. Fighting enemies and earning experience lets players expand the arena piece by piece, with new tiles unlocking weapons, upgrades, healing, defensive tools, and potentially risky synergies.
That means map construction becomes part of the build itself. Instead of simply adapting to a procedurally generated arena, players actively shape their fighting space and must live with those choices as the run grows increasingly chaotic.
Every Tile Can Change a Volatiles Run
Different layouts can create new opportunities and problems, making positioning experimentation as important as choosing weapons or upgrades. Failing a run sends the player back to a water-filled tank, but with the knowledge needed to potentially make smarter decisions next time.
It gives Volatiles a distinctive hook within an increasingly busy roguelike space. Publisher 11 bit studios is already familiar with the genre through games such as Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault, although Volatiles appears considerably darker in both setting and presentation.
Something Is Growing Inside Your Mind
The battles apparently take place inside the protagonist’s head. Players awaken in a covert laboratory with no memory of how they arrived there and are told the experiments are part of some form of treatment. Instead, increasingly disturbing visions send them into an analogue sci-fi nightmare filled with battles that should not exist.
People outside the simulation watch, while something buried in the protagonist’s mind seems to be learning how to take control. That mystery provides the narrative backdrop for repeated runs rather than leaving the roguelike structure disconnected from the story.
Volatiles is currently in development for PC via Steam. Team Instant Defeat and 11 bit studios have not announced a release date yet.
