Cyberpunk 2077 Movie Is in Development at Paramount

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 is heading to the big screen, with Paramount developing a live-action film set within the dystopian world of Night City.

According to Deadline, veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to the project alongside CD Projekt Red. Di Bonaventura is best known for his extensive work on the Transformers films and properties including G.I. Joe.

CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski has also acknowledged Paramount’s involvement, saying the studio is excited to work with a partner that shares its “creative ambitions” for the wider Cyberpunk franchise. Beyond that, however, the movie remains in its very early stages.

Will the Cyberpunk 2077 Movie Follow V and Johnny Silverhand?

No director, screenwriter, cast, or release window has been announced, and Paramount hasn’t revealed what story the film will tell. That leaves one particularly obvious question unanswered: whether it will directly adapt Cyberpunk 2077 or simply tell another story set somewhere within the same universe.

The game follows mercenary V through Night City after a disastrous job leaves them carrying a biochip containing Johnny Silverhand’s digital engram, portrayed by Keanu Reeves. Neither character has been confirmed for the film, and fans should not assume Reeves’ involvement at this stage. A new cast and story would hardly be unfamiliar territory for the franchise either.

Cyberpunk Has Already Found Success Beyond the Games

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners expanded Night City through an entirely separate group of characters rather than adapting V’s story, with CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger now preparing Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 for Netflix on October 20.

The 10-episode follow-up is itself a standalone story with a fresh cast, centred around revenge and redemption in Night City. Interestingly, this isn’t CD Projekt Red’s first attempt to bring Cyberpunk to live action. The company announced a partnership with Anonymous Content in 2023 to develop a live-action project set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.

CD Projekt Red still refers to that live-action project as announced earlier this year, but it hasn’t publicly clarified whether Paramount’s movie is connected to that earlier collaboration. For now, Paramount’s film gives Night City another route beyond games and animation, but exactly who will inhabit this version of it remains the biggest unanswered question.
