Ordinary Oddness Open-World RPG Blends Cosy City Life With the Supernatural
Cosmicpup Studio has revealed Ordinary Oddness, a new open-world action RPG that blends detective work, fast-paced squad combat, and an unsettling city where supernatural creatures are part of everyday life.
Built in Unreal Engine 5, the game takes place across Elysian Skies, a cloud-bound metropolis filled with everything from residential districts and neon shopping streets to a lawless Undercity. Humans share the city with strange entities known as Mythoids, including a Y-shaped loudspeaker serving as mayor and a candy vending machine that can eventually become a boss encounter.
It is an intentionally strange setup, but Cosmicpup seems keen to make that weirdness feel normal to the people who actually live there.
Elysian Skies Hides a Second, Stranger World
Beneath the city’s colourful surface are Psycheidos Zones, fractured spaces where gravity, memories and physical reality no longer follow familiar rules.
These areas are a darker counterpart to everyday Elysian Skies, and players venture inside to uncover memories and clues tied to the city’s past. Cosmicpup says environmental storytelling will also play a major role, with streets and buildings packed with pop-culture references and visual details for players willing to look beyond the obvious.
The mix of open-world exploration and supernatural investigation puts Ordinary Oddness among an increasingly crowded field of large-scale action RPGs, alongside projects like Project TAL, which similarly builds its combat around companions and coordinated encounters.

Build a Detective Agency Between Investigations
Players take on the role of a Consulting Investigator running their own Detective Agency, with City Commissions forming a major part of the progression loop.
Solving cases provides resources used to expand the agency and unlock new combat abilities, although seemingly routine investigations eventually feed into a larger mystery surrounding Luminar, a figure from the protagonist’s past, and the Nightingale Theater conspiracy.
The setup gives Ordinary Oddness more than a straightforward mission structure, tying character progression directly to the investigations players undertake across the city.
Squad Combat Rewards Swapping, Parries and Teamwork
Combat shifts focus to a team of recruitable characters, including M.I.A. Director Sia, mechanical specialist Luka and Moonkind warrior Byakko. Players can rapidly swap between squad members to chain elemental skills and tag attacks, while Perfect Dodges, blocks, and parries create opportunities for heavier counters.
Cosmicpup also highlighted coordinated enemy AI, including an eight-puppet boss encounter where enemies can work together rather than attacking independently. That squad-focused approach has become increasingly prominent across modern action RPGs, including Arknights: Endfield and its move towards real-time party combat and open-world exploration.
Ordinary Oddness currently has no confirmed release date. Its Steam page is now live for wishlisting, with Cosmicpup Studio releasing the first reveal trailer alongside the announcement.
