Deadhaus Sonata Dark Rebirth Begins a Major Early Access Reinvention
Apocalypse Studios has launched Deadhaus Sonata: Dark Rebirth, a substantial free update that effectively begins rebuilding its dark fantasy action RPG after a troubled Early Access debut in May.
Rather than presenting Dark Rebirth as routine post-launch support, the studio describes it as the first step towards transforming Deadhaus Sonata into the game it originally envisioned. The update moves development to Unreal Engine 5.7 and overhauls its visual direction, combat, performance, and exploration.
The studio has also been unusually direct about what still needs work. The studio has temporarily disabled co-op and cosmetics while testing the new systems, and it’s removing the Catacombs altogether, replacing them with a more handcrafted area.
The Charnel Vale Is Now Five Times Bigger
One of the biggest changes is a complete reconstruction of the Charnel Vale. The area is now roughly five times its previous size, with more vertical routes, hidden areas and access to the exterior Land of the Dead. Apocalypse Studios says the aim is to give exploration a greater role alongside the combat rather than leaving players moving through relatively confined spaces.
That redesign sits alongside a broader shift towards a more stylised Gothic aesthetic under new Creative Director Ethan McKinnon. Dark Rebirth also introduces reworked volumetric lighting, screen-space ambient occlusion, and dynamic weather, including lightning that can damage characters.
Apocalypse says the move to Unreal Engine 5.7 also helped with extensive optimisation work, particularly around geometry and lighting bottlenecks that previously hurt performance.

Deadhaus Sonata Combat Gets Bloodier and More Responsive
Combat has received an equally substantial pass. Swords, heavy axes, and spears now have more distinct pacing and animation timing, while dismemberment, heavier gore, and finisher executions have been added based on player feedback.
The playable Vampire physically reflects that punishment too. Its appearance deteriorates through five stages as health falls, eventually leaving the character in a severely emaciated state. Players can then earn three tiers of Vampire Armour as progression continues.
Build customisation has expanded through the Feats and Inscriptions system, Celestial Gates and five additional Tarot cards, while more than 40 new weapons have also been added. The gothic action RPG remains heavily influenced by Denis Dyack’s earlier work, particularly Legacy of Kain. That series is also seeing a revival, with Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered returning alongside a playable Dark Prophecy demo earlier this year.
Dark Rebirth Is Only Part One
Apocalypse Studios is already describing this as Dark Rebirth: Part 1, rather than the finished overhaul. A future Part 2 and The Rise of the Blood Moon are planned, with a new roadmap expected to detail where development heads next.
Deadhaus Sonata originally entered Steam Early Access on May 14 and currently carries a Mostly Positive user rating. The Dark Rebirth update is now available on Steam, and the game is discounted by 25% to US$14.99 through October 26.
