Destiny: Rising Brings Bungie Sci-fi Shooter to Mobile

The world of Destiny is about to get a little bigger, thanks to the confirmation of the long-rumoured mobile game. In a new reveal, we finally get to see Destiny: Rising in the flesh, a free-to-play mobile shooter set within the sci-fi universe.

While it is built on the world created by Bungie, the mobile adventure is being developed by the folks at NetEase Games. They have already released Diablo ImmortalOnce Human, and the more exciting Marvel Rivals, which is coming soon. For those with a long memory, you might recall that the Chinese gaming company once invested in Bungie back in 2018 to help fund a new game, but following Sony’s buyout of the studio, those plans were shelved. Now, it seems like there has been a change of mind, with Destiny: Rising being the primary beneficiary.

“For over a decade, we have built this universe to contain many unique and wonderful stories, and we are excited to see mobile gamers be able to experience this new take on the Destiny universe from the creative team at NetEase,” said Terry Redfield, creative lead at Bungie.

As a mobile shooter, players will be able to switch between first and third-person perspectives, with touch controls and controller support completing the overall package. With Bungie “providing oversight and approvals of the game’s development,” the hope is that the mobile experience will feel as good as the console and PC versions.

In more news, the game will be taking place in an alternate timeline, giving the developers the flexibility to explore the lore of the Destiny universe without making an impact on the mainline games. Destiny: Rising will tell a tale in the post-Dark Age era, and is officially described as:

As a genesis of new possibilities in the Destiny Universe, Destiny: Rising delves into an unseen era where burgeoning hope blooms once again after a terrifying collapse of civilization and the dangers of the resulting Dark Age. With the help of legendary Iron Lords, humanity has broken free the shackles of tyranny and began to rally together against the alien forces intent on its extinction. Amidst the chaos of this early age for The City, a new generation of Lightbearers, resurrected by mysterious entities known as Ghosts, set out to restore humanity’s prominence and secure its future.

Expect to engage in single-player, co-op and multiplayer gameplay, and returning players should find plenty of comfort in a variety of modes. We will also be getting Strikes, and the appearance of several iconic characters and locations in the franchise. A closed alpha will begin this November, with no release date set just yet.
