PlayStation Welcomes New First-Party Studio in Dark Outlaw Games

Now, Playstation Has a Fresh First-party Studio in Dark Outlaw Games, Led by Veteran Cod: Black Ops Developer Jason Blundell.

Most gamers would agree that one of Sony PlayStation’s biggest strengths as a gaming brand lies in its first-party exclusive titles. Sony’s investment — often reaching hundreds of millions of dollars per game — has consistently paid off, earning critical acclaim, fan appreciation, and impressive sales figures. Despite recent layoffs and studio closures, PlayStation has added a new arrow to its quiver in the newly established studio, Dark Outlaw Games.

Dark Outlaw Games is led by Jason Blundell, a former co-studio head at Treyarch Games, best known for its work on Call of Duty’s iconic Zombies mode. Blundell has an extensive history with the Call of Duty franchise. He served as a producer for Call of Duty: Black Ops, was a campaign designer for Black Ops II, served as the game director for both the campaign and Zombies mode in Black Ops III, and did the job of director/producer for career mode and Zombies in Black Ops 4.

Interestingly, this isn’t Blundell’s first time working under Sony’s umbrella. He was one of the co-founders of Deviation Games, a studio that previously collaborated with PlayStation on an exclusive title for the PS5. However, that studio was shut down in 2024 before producing any games. Blundell had already departed from the company in 2022, two years before its closure.

In a recent interview with Jeff Gerstmann, Blundell revealed that Dark Outlaw Games has actually been operating for some time and is still in the process of expanding its team. While he remained tight-lipped about the studio’s first game, he promised to share more details when the time is right.

For now, Blundell will take on the roles of both studio head and director at the studio. No additional details have been provided regarding its debut game, including its genre or the budget Sony has allocated for its development.
