Since its intial introduction to the gaming world, Funcom‘s Dune: Awakening has been building up a head of steam as developers outlined the multiplayer survival experience that awaited players. The excitement proved to be real, as the June 10 launch of the game was met with positive reviews and copies sold. To date, the game has now sold over 1 million copies in just two weeks.
It remains a pleasant surprise, especially since hype doesn’t always translate to commercial success. At launch, over 140,000 concurrent players took to the planet of Arrakis and started their adventures. At its peak, the numbers hit a high of 189,333.
“Dune: Awakening launched June 10 and 1,000,000 players have awakened!” the studio shared in a celebratory statement. “It’s now Funcom’s fastest-selling game ever. To put it into perspective, it took Conan Exiles one year to reach this number. We’re truly humbled and thankful for this reception. It must also be noted that you certainly don’t live up to your title, because you have been busy since launch.
“Launch has been a Coriolis storm, and we’re still riding that mighty gale. We have seen so many amazing things from all of you — the bases, the close calls with Shai-Hulud, the epic vehicle jumps, the struggles, discoveries, victories, heroic deaths, and so much more… We salute you, Sleepers.”
More Spice Awaits in Dune: Awakening
This is only the start for Dune: Awakening, with plans already in motion to tweak and enhance its PvP experience.
“We have a lot of plans to address [players’] points about respawn times and revives,” creative director Joel Bylos said.
“Full loot is a decree that can be obtained via the Landsraad (so compete there if you want to make it a reality), there are control points in the deep desert already, we have no plans to reduce the DD size. As we work on the game, we will continue to work on making PvP more rewarding (I am sure you will note I am not being very concrete but that is because we are planning and watching how people are playing and finding the right points to address).”
The Ornithopter will also undergo some changes, with its ability to eliminate players with its body already patched out.
