a Full Astro Bot Platformer Leaps Onto Playstation 5 This September

One of the biggest and most welcomed surprises of Sony PlayStation’s May 2024 State of Play presentation has to be the brand new Astro Bot platformer coming from Team Asobi. Debuting its first trailer, we get to watch the adorable little fella getting up to all sorts of adventure across a variety of worlds, all with a colourful dash of PlayStation-inspired elements.

As part of the expanded adventure, players will be able to explore six galaxies and over 80 levels in search of Astro’s scattered crew. This means holding on tight to your Dual Speeder and diving down to each unique planet, from lush forests, sandy beaches, and hot volcanoes to more surprising locations such as a gigantic hourglass or the canopy of a singing tree.

Just like other games involving the titular hero, Astro Bot will take advantage of what the DualSense controller has to offer, with 15 new abilities offering unique play styles. For example, Barkster, the Bulldog Booster, lets you air-dash and smash through enemies, metal and glass, while the Twin-Frog Gloves offer long-range punching and the ability to swing. There’s also the Giant Sponge that lets you suck up water from the environment to grow huge and cause massive (and slightly moist) destruction.

Along the way, over 70 new types of enemies will try to stop you from getting where you need to be, including massive bosses that will stand tall at the end of each galaxy. Naturally, defeating them will lead to rewards, but Team Asobi remain tight-lipped on what they are, so that’s exciting. Furthermore, there are die-and-retry levels for those seeking a greater challenge.

Astro Bot Gameplay

Of course, the best part of Astro Bot is the many obvious and subtle references to PlayStation’s history, and we do see a bunch of them in the trailer as well. From characters like Nathan Drake, Kratos, and Aloy, to past generations of consoles and accessories making an appearance, this is truly a celebration of gaming on the PlayStation side.

Get ready to blast off this September 6, with pre-orders for Astro Bot beginning on June 7.
