A Scalebound Revival Remains on Hideki Kamiya’s Mind

Kamiya Has Publicly Called on Phil Spencer to Bring Scalebound Back to Life.

The gaming industry has seen many promising projects cancelled despite their strong initial concepts and significant market potential. One such case that left a lasting impact on Microsoft’s gaming progress was Scalebound. Many were excited about the game, but it never saw the light of day. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the mastermind behind the project, Hideki Kamiya, has indicated that he wants to bring it back somehow.

Originally envisioned as an action game centered around massive dragons, Scalebound generated high anticipation before Microsoft ultimately canned the project. The cancellation shocked fans and continued reinforcing the notion of the lack of strong Xbox-exclusive titles in the previous console generation.

Now, Kamiya, with his newly established studio ClOVERS Inc., is showing interest in revisiting Scalebound. While his studio is already working on the highly anticipated sequel to Okami, Kamiya has interest in exploring the possibility of reviving Scalebound as well.

This came out of a recent short video released by the studio, which featured Kamiya at his workspace. In the video, he is seen showing Scalebound to his colleagues, sparking speculation about the project’s future. Kamiya later reposted the clip on his X/Twitter account, directly addressing Xbox chief Phil Spencer. His message was simple but bold, an open invitation for Spencer to consider reviving the long-lost project.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Scalebound was set to feature Drew, a protagonist who formed a bond with Thuban, a mighty dragon. The game was designed to include cooperative multiplayer elements, making it an ambitious project with significant potential. However, Microsoft chose not to continue with the project in 2017, leaving many disappointed.

With Kamiya’s renewed enthusiasm, the question remains — will Microsoft and Xbox consider reviving Scalebound? Fans will have to wait and see whether this long-dormant project finally gets another chance.
