Bungie Hands New Moba -smash Bros Project Gummy Bears to Unknown Playstation Studio

The significant amount of money Sony spent to acquire Bungie wasn’t just because the gaming giant admired the creative powers of the development team. It is also evident that Sony has the ambition to create more profitable live-service titles, even if the likes of Concord have been expensive missteps. That isn’t stopping Bungie or Sony though, with details about the project titled Gummy Bears being brought to light that make for interesting reading.

According to information shared by GamePost, Gummy Bears is described as a mix between a multiplayer online battle arena and Super Smash Bros., making it a team-based competitive game featuring three classes: Attack, Support, and Defense. While the names suggest the roles are clear, how that will play out in actual combat remains to be seen.

Taking inspiration from Smash Bros., players won’t be looking at the traditional HP values. Instead, your progress towards eliminating your opponents is represented by a percentage-based damage system. The higher the number, the more characters can be knocked back or ultimately, knocked out of the map completely.

Gameplay will unfold across different game modes, depending on player preferences, and will likely involve competitive modes alongside more casual ones where players can “hang out with friends in between matches and express their identities in the game.”

The colourful and lo-fi art direction is also key to reaching the younger audience set for Gummy Bears, which will be a considerable departure for the Bungie developers working on the game. Speaking of which, the project has also changed hands from Bungie to a new PlayStation studio, but around 40 Bungie developers are helping to spearhead the project.

We still do not know much about Gummy Bears, but recent patent filings could also be vital clues for those hoping to know more. This includes the system of MOBA towers that can move and use special abilities, which will definitely be not something genre veterans would expect.

Neither Bungie nor Sony have commented on Gummy Bears just yet.
