Chrono Trigger 30th Anniversary Celebrations Brings New Projects

As gamers from the early generations of video gaming look to more modern experiences, the pangs of nostalgia can remain ever strong, especially for Japanese roleplaying epics. Among the many classic titles developed by Squaresoft (now Square Enix), one name continues to stand the test of time, and that is Chrono Trigger.

It can be hard to stomach, but Chrono Trigger is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025. Initially released in 1995 for the SNES, this timeless RPG has maintained a dedicated fanbase and remains one of the most beloved games in history.

And such a milestone means that Square Enix has got some grand plans. In an announcement posted on X/Twitter, the company revealed that it plans to celebrate Chrono Trigger’s anniversary with multiple projects. They have even teased that these projects will “break the boundaries” of the game world itself. Such wording could point to actual physical events, such as concerts or special exhibitions.

What makes this even more interesting is the resurgence of Chrono Trigger in the gaming charts. Thanks to a special discount on the mobile version, the game has once again climbed into the top five best-selling games on iOS, following the confirmation of the anniversary celebration.

Chrono Trigger holds a special place in gaming history, not just for its engaging gameplay and story, but also for the involvement of several legendary developers. The game was a collaborative effort between Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest), Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball), and Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy), making it an RPG dream team project.

Unfortunately, as of now, there is no indication that Chrono Trigger will receive a remake treatment similar to that of Dragon Quest III, which was released some time ago. Fans hoping for a full-fledged remake must wait and see what Square Enix has in store for this classic title’s 30th anniversary.
