After producing numerous disappointing products like Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda, the hope was that returning to the realm of character and narrative-driven fantasy RPGs would be the best way for Bioware to return to form. Dragon Age: The Veilguard was certainly a step in the right direction, but with opinions still divided among fans, the sales performance has been subsequently affected, and it’s not good news for publisher Electronic Arts.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the total sales of Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to meet EA’s expectations, which was something the publisher wasn’t planning for. In terms of actual numbers, the RPG sold only around 1.5 million copies across all platforms worldwide, with this figure being 50% lower than what EA had initially forecasted.
Unfortunately, Dragon Age: The Veilguard wasn’t the only title that did not meet expectations for the fiscal year. The usually dependable EA Sports FC franchise was also front and centre, with mixed reviews for EA Sports FC 25 contributing to much lower sales numbers than the historic highs the company is used to. It is the football sports game that brings in huge numbers each year, and with this underperformance, the declining sales of other titles become more apparent.
With all that said, EA is well aware of the negativity surrounding such news and is actively working to rectify things before the next fiscal year. CEO Andrew Wilson, expressed optimism about improving EA’s financial records and delivering better results, but how that will be achieved is still up in the air at this moment.m
