A24 Pushes into Video Game Adaptations
Independent film production house A24 has earned acclaim for championing creative, auteur-driven cinema. Rather than chasing predictable blockbusters, the studio thrives on projects that push artistic boundaries. That philosophy has now extended into the gaming space.
After previously announcing its partnership with Hideo Kojima on a Death Stranding adaptation, A24 has confirmed its next project: a feature film based on FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed Elden Ring. For fans, this represents one of the boldest moves yet in the growing wave of game-to-film adaptations.
Miyazaki Won Over by Garland’s Ambition
A recent New Yorker deep dive revealed the unusual lengths A24 went to secure the adaptation rights. The idea originated with director Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation), a long-time fan of Elden Ring. Garland introduced the game to Noah Sacco, head of film at A24, and the two began developing the idea of a cinematic adaptation.

To persuade FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki, Garland prepared a 160-page draft script supported by 40 pages of concept art. He then flew to Japan to present the materials in person, demonstrating his intent to capture the spirit and scope of the game.
The dedication paid off. Miyazaki and FromSoftware ultimately gave their approval, confirming Garland as director of the upcoming Elden Ring movie.
What We Know About the Elden Ring Movie
While no release window, casting announcements, or story details have been confirmed, the early signs suggest a highly ambitious project. Given A24’s reputation and Garland’s history with cerebral, visually striking science fiction, the Elden Ring film may prioritise atmosphere, mystery, and world-building over conventional Hollywood spectacle.
This approach mirrors the essence of FromSoftware’s design philosophy, where fragmented lore and player discovery form the backbone of storytelling. If Garland stays true to this vision, the adaptation could set a new standard for video game films.
For now, fans can only speculate, but the collaboration between A24, Garland, and FromSoftware has already positioned Elden Ring as one of the most anticipated adaptations in development.
