Evangelion 30th Anniversary Project Reveals Yoko Taro Involvement in Anime

NieR creator Yoko Taro will serve as story writer and series composer for a brand-new Evangelion anime, produced by Studio Khara and CloverWorks.

Evangelion Marks 30 Years With New Anime Project

Neon Genesis Evangelion is officially returning with a brand-new anime project announced as part of the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

While Hideaki Anno’s Rebuild film series concluded with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, the broader universe is far from finished. A new production is now underway, bringing together major creative forces from both anime and gaming.

Studio Khara and CloverWorks Lead Production

The upcoming anime will be produced by Studio Khara, the studio founded by Anno, alongside CloverWorks. Kazuya Tsurumaki, who directed the Rebuild films, is returning to helm the project. He will be joined by Toko Yatabe, who previously served as Assistant Director on Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.

Story details have not yet been revealed, and it remains unclear whether the new series will continue existing continuity or explore an entirely fresh narrative direction.

Yoko Taro and Keiichi Okabe Reunite

The most unexpected reveal is Yoko Taro‘s involvement, best known for his work on the NieR series. Taro will serve as the story writer and oversee series composition for the new anime.

He will once again collaborate with composer Keiichi Okabe, whose work on NieR: Automata earned widespread acclaim. Okabe has been confirmed as the composer for the project. The pairing of the series’ psychological legacy with Taro’s philosophical storytelling has already sparked intense discussion among fans.

Production is currently in its early stages, and no release window has been announced.
