Final Fantasy IX Anime Project Gets a Title and Clearer Format

Square Enix has still not confirmed a Final Fantasy IX remake, but the franchise’s other long-discussed project is beginning to take a more concrete shape. The Final Fantasy IX anime is being developed by French studio EuroVisual, with a newly revealed title of Black Mages Legacy, a defined episode count, and a clearer idea of who the series is actually for.

The key shift is expectation management. For some fans, the lack of remake news after the game’s 25th anniversary marked a soft end to the remake narrative. What remains is a different kind of continuation: an animated project positioned as an entry point for younger viewers rather than a nostalgia-forward retelling for longtime players.

Black Mages Legacy Centres on Vivi’s Children

The anime’s official title has been revealed as Final Fantasy IX: Black Mages Legacy, and it introduces a new storyline built around the children of Vivi. The cast includes Imell, Koln, Luciola, Thea, Fala, and Doc, living in Alexandria.

Their journey begins when Koln discovers Mel frozen like a statue, triggering fears that they may share the same fate as their father and pushing them into an investigation that opens up fresh lore.

For anyone expecting a direct adaptation of Final Fantasy IX’s main plot, this is an important clarification. Black Mages Legacy is an original continuation rather than a compressed retelling of the game.

EuroVisual Is Targeting a Younger Audience

EuroVisual has framed the series as aimed at children and teenagers, with the intent of introducing Final Fantasy IX’s world and themes to a new generation. That choice has obvious implications for tone and structure. It suggests a more accessible narrative, lighter pacing, and a story that can stand on its own without assuming deep knowledge of the original game.

This is also why the project should not be read as a substitute for a remake. It is not trying to recreate the PS1 experience with modern presentation. It is expanding the brand in a format designed to travel beyond the existing fan base.

A 10-episode, 22 Minute Format

EuroVisual has also clarified the structure. Black Mages Legacy is set for 10 episodes, with each episode running around 22 minutes. Earlier industry chatter suggested 13 episodes, but the current plan is more compact, which typically points to a tighter arc and a clearer beginning-to-end goal.

Production is now said to be underway, but there is still no confirmed release window. Speculation has pointed as far out as 2028, though that remains unverified without a distributor or schedule announcement.

For now, Black Mages Legacy is the most tangible new Final Fantasy IX project on the horizon, even if it is not the one many fans expected.
