With 2025 already more than halfway done, everything seems to be ramping up to an exciting end of the year in terms of entertainment options. Something that overlaps with both movies and video games is New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures‘ upcoming Mortal Kombat 2. After setting a pretty high bar with its first outing, the sequel is highly anticipated, with the latest trailer adding to the hype.
Having Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage front and centre definitely works a treat, giving us a glimpse of the backstory of the loud-mouthed hero at his lowest ebb. That is, until Tadanobu Asano’s (Shōgun) Raiden arrives with Jessica McNamee’s (The Loved Ones) Sonya Blade in tow to invite him to fight for the fate of Earthrealm.
Without the necessary powers or supernatural abilities, Cage can only depend on his martial arts training to compete. This should set up a nice arc for Urban to evolve the character, and perhaps spark a romantic connection with Blade in Mortal Kombat 2.
The Cast of Mortal Kombat 2
Cage is not the only new face who will be joining the fight in Mortal Kombat 2. Kitana is played by Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), a fan-favourite who will be wielding her iconic steel fans. As the daughter of Queen Sindel, who is brought to life by Ana Thu Nguyen (The Spy Who Never Dies), she is likely to play an essential role in the sequel.
Desmond Chiam (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) is Jerrod, who is the king of Edenia in the games. The realm was eventually lost to Shao Kahn (more on him later), and we won’t be expecting anything different here. Along for the ride will also be Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), who is Jade, Kitan’s bodyguard. She will have plenty to do against the various villains that are on the other side,

That leads us to Shao Kahn, the emperor of Outworld and the main antagonist, who is played by Martyn Ford. There is also CJ Bloomfield (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) as Baraka, who sees the Tarkatans making their appearance in the movie franchise. There is also Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, who might have a bigger role to play down the line.
As for the familiar faces, we already know that Ludi Lin (Power Rangers) returns as Liu Kang, and so are Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Chin Han (Skyscraper) as Shang Tsung, Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl) as Jax, and Hiroyuki Sanada (Shōgun) as Scorpion. Deceased fighters are also making a comeback. Joe Taslim (The Raid) appears as the likely Noob Saibot, while Josh Lawson (House of Lies) and Max Huang (Hidden Strike) are back as Kano and Kung Lao.
The Simon McQuoid-directed Mortal Kombat 2 will arrive in theatres on October 24.
