Nintendo Shares First Official The Legend of Zelda Live Action Images
Nintendo’s renewed push into feature films has been met with enormous anticipation, especially after the global success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The company’s next cinematic project is far more ambitious. A live action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is currently in production, and fans have finally been treated to the first official images.
Filming began earlier this year in New Zealand, with several leaked clips circulating long before Nintendo was ready to comment. The company has now chosen to release a proper first look through Nintendo Today app, offering the clearest sense yet of the film’s tone and visual direction.
Introducing the Leads: Zelda and Link
Nintendo published three photos revealing the film’s two leads. Bo Bragason appears as Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth takes on the role of Link. One image shows the pair standing together in a broad green field, evoking a naturalistic, high fantasy approach that aligns with the franchise’s scenic identity.
Notably, Dichen Lachman, who was previously spotted on set and rumoured to be portraying Impa, is absent from the initial reveal. Her role remains unconfirmed.

Visual Style Fuels Timeline Speculation
Fans have already begun dissecting the images, particularly the contrast between the characters’ costumes. Zelda’s blue tunic draws clear inspiration from her The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild appearance, while Link stands in a traditional green outfit that recalls the series’ earlier eras.
The stylistic mix has sparked speculation that the film may draw from multiple points in the franchise’s long chronology, potentially creating a hybrid aesthetic rather than adapting a single game directly. Nintendo has not commented on this interpretation.
Major Creative Questions Remain
Plot details are still being kept under wraps, and Nintendo has yet to discuss how the film will approach the worldbuilding of Hyrule. One of the biggest lingering questions revolves around Link’s portrayal. Fans remain divided on whether he will maintain the silent tradition that defines most of his in game incarnations or take on a fully voiced role for the adaptation.
The live action Legend of Zelda film is currently scheduled to release on May 7, 2027. With filming underway and official images now available, anticipation is continuing to build as fans await further reveals.
