Nintendo’s Next Big Screen Era
For a company with decades of beloved IPs, it’s surprising that Nintendo’s move into cinema only truly began recently. Yet, its first major effort — The Super Mario Bros. Movie — proved a box office phenomenon, raking in over $1 billion worldwide and reinvigorating confidence among fans and investors alike.
That success has since sparked a wave of momentum. Alongside the confirmed Super Mario Galaxy Movie sequel and the live-action Legend of Zelda adaptation, the company has now officially revealed plans to expand its cinematic universe even further.
More Nintendo Films Officially in Development
In its latest financial report, which also marked the milestone of over 10 million Switch 2 units sold, the gaming giant reaffirmed its long-term commitment to film.
President Shuntaro Furukawa shared presentation materials confirming that at least two more films are already in early planning stages, signalling that movie releases will become a consistent fixture in the company’s entertainment strategy.
To support this vision, it has introduced a new production framework that ensures smoother coordination between its game development and cinematic divisions.

A Hands-On Approach to Filmmaking
Quality control remains central to the company’s creative philosophy. Furukawa stressed that the company will stay actively involved at every stage of production — from concept to final cut — ensuring that adaptations stay true to the heart of each franchise.
This aligns with the earlier decision to establish Nintendo Pictures, an in-house animation studio dedicated to producing video content that reflects the company’s playful and imaginative DNA. The studio’s debut short, Pikmin: Close to You, already showcases that hands-on creative touch.
What Comes Next
At present, two projects have been officially announced:
- Super Mario Galaxy Movie – releasing April 2026
- The Legend of Zelda (Live-Action) – in cinemas May 7, 2027
Beyond these, at least two additional films are in the pipeline, each based on yet-to-be-named properties. If the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie was any indication, this marks the start of a sustained, cross-media expansion that could redefine an iconic presence in pop culture.
