Suikoden II Anime Airing in 2026, Combines Stylish 2D Hand-Drawn and 3D Visual Techniques

The Suikoden II anime is confirmed to begin airing in 2026, combining 2D hand-drawn animation with 3D elements.

After lying dormant for many years, one of the most beloved RPG franchises, Suikoden, is finally making a long-awaited comeback. The series’ owner, Konami, appears to fully grasp the potential the IP still holds, especially after the overwhelming support garnered by its spiritual successor, Eiyuden Chronicle. In addition to a planned gacha game, Konami has now confirmed the development of an anime adaptation based on what many fans regard as the franchise’s best entry: Suikoden II.

Konami had previously confirmed the existence of the Suikoden II anime, but new details have recently emerged alongside the reveal of the Star Leap battle system. As part of a recent interview with Famitsu, Konami shared further insights into the anime’s production process, which leverages a variety of the company’s in-house game development technologies.

How the Suikoden II Anime is Being Made

One of the most notable innovations is the use of 3D CG camera technology to pre-visualise and finalise cinematic camera angles that enhance immersion before transitioning scenes into traditional hand-drawn animation.

Additionally, the team is incorporating motion capture, employing real actors to serve as reference points for character performance. These performances are then used to shape the storyboard and improve overall frame composition.

Notably, Konami is bringing in experienced stunt performers, some of whom previously worked on major titles like Final Fantasy VII Remake and NieR: Automata, to ensure the action scenes meet high standards of quality and authenticity.

Director Yuzu Sato confirmed that the project, which the newly formed Konami Animation division is handling, will not be a one-season production. He emphasised that the team is working closely with the original game developers to ensure key details are preserved, while also adapting the story in a way that is accessible to newcomers unfamiliar with the original RPG.

Set for release in 2026, the Suikoden II anime does not yet have a specific premiere date, but promises a unique visual styles that will breathe new life into a timeless classic.
