Avowed’s Xbox Exclusivity Era Comes to an End
After months and months of fans wondering, Avowed will officially head to PlayStation 5, marking a significant shift for one of Xbox’s most high-profile RPGs. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the game launched in 2025 as a PC and Xbox Series X|S exclusive, positioned as a cornerstone of Microsoft’s first-party RPG strategy.
That exclusivity is now ending. Obsidian has confirmed that Avowed will release on PlayStation 5 later this year as part of the New Game+ Showcase, opening the Living Lands to an entirely new audience and continuing Microsoft’s broader trend of bringing previously exclusive titles to rival platforms.
The PS5 Version Is More Than a Straight Port
Obsidian has made it clear that the PS5 edition is not a bare-bones conversion. The PlayStation 5 version of Avowed will take advantage of the DualSense controller, including haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support, adding greater physicality to combat, spellcasting, and exploration.
The PS5 release will also include all post-launch updates and content released to date, positioning it as the most complete version of the game for new players on Sony’s platform.
A Major Anniversary Update for All Platforms
Alongside the PS5 launch, Obsidian will roll out a substantial anniversary update for Avowed across all platforms. This update significantly expands the game’s systems and replayability, most notably through the introduction of New Game Plus.
New Game Plus allows players to carry over all equippable gear into a fresh playthrough, reset their character to level one, and face modified enemy encounters designed to challenge returning players. It is a feature long requested by the community and one that fundamentally reshapes how the game can be revisited.
Beyond New Game Plus, the anniversary update also adds a photo mode, three new playable races, a new weapon type, and the ability to change your character’s appearance directly from the overworld. Together, these additions represent one of the most meaningful post-launch updates the game has received since release.
A Strategic Expansion for Obsidian’s RPG
The expansion to PS5, paired with a content-rich anniversary update, reflects a broader industry trend toward extending the lifespan of major single-player RPGs rather than locking them to a single ecosystem.
