Performance Over Visual Effects
Ray-tracing has become one of the most talked-about features in gaming, promising cinematic lighting, shadows, and reflections. However, for Battlefield 6, Electronic Arts (EA) and Battlefield Studios (formerly DICE) have decided to take a different path. Instead of chasing graphical spectacle, the team is prioritising stability and performance across all platforms.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Technical Director Christian Buhl confirmed that Battlefield 6 will not include ray-tracing at launch. More surprisingly, it will not be added in a post-launch update either.
Why Ray-Tracing Was Dropped
Buhl explained that the decision was made after analysing hardware trends and beta feedback. A large portion of the Battlefield 6 community plays on low- to mid-range PCs, where ray-tracing is less practical. By excluding it, EA ensures that the core experience remains smooth and consistent for the broadest possible audience.
On PC, players will still have extensive visual flexibility. EA has promised “jaw-dropping visuals” through the Frostbite Engine, even without ray-tracing, and remains focused on ensuring a balanced experience for competitive multiplayer.

Buhl highlighted that the Frostbite Engine version powering Battlefield 6 supports more than 600 adjustable settings, giving players complete control over graphics and performance tuning.
Aligning With Beta Feedback
During the game’s beta phase, performance proved to be a central concern for testers. EA noted that many players preferred higher framerates and smoother gameplay over advanced visual effects. This feedback directly influenced the decision to drop ray-tracing, allowing the team to optimise gameplay for large-scale battles without compromise.
Battlefield 6 is set to release on October 10, launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
